Why basenjis?

With first eye contact with a basenji you see a marvelous breed. With is grace and
charm it spellbound you for life. The basenji however can sometimes be difficult to handle
in some situations. You really have to be open minded for such a seldom breed.
If you try to think of the basenji as a native breed it will help you a lot!

Picture yourself living in the stone age and fighting for survival
never knowing if there will be food on the table...
THAT IS THE BASENJI!

For thousands of years the basenji has lived with humans. And they still do in central Africa.
The are living with the tribes helping them in the hunt in exchange of a warm place by the fire at night.
Cooperation is mutual and the bushmen appreciates a helping hand when hunting a pray.
With a basenji they also got someone to guard over the village!
The basenji in so important for the bushmen that the are higher respected than the wives.
A good hunting basenji is pride and status.

As a newly come basenji owner you have to think of the basenji roots.
Of course the breeding and living has changed the basenji some but they still have
their native instincts intact. All basenjis hunts, from birds and bikes to the neighbors cat!
The basenji is fast and it happens that they unfortunally becomes hit by cars.
So therefore NEVER LET AT BASENJI LOOSE NEAR A ROAD OR RAILWAY!!

The basenji is very fit for agility. If you witch to attend such a carrier you have a
big job to do! They are not afraid and the run the agility track without hesitation, but
when they have done that, that's when the trouble begins! The seem very pleased
at the beginning but then the always detect something that is more fun,
an runs away to explore it! So you really have to keep the basenjis attention.

Lure-coursing is a very popular sport. It's great to se the basenjis "true self".
To chase the lure at an incredible speed is just as chasing on the African savannah.
Afterwards when they finally catches the lure, they are so happy and tired!

The biggest challenge of all is obedience!
The basenji is very good at it IF you are a good and funny trainer!
They are always seeking new adventures and somehow it always seems that
just that adventure appears while training on the obedience court.
So they run off because they "just want to have a look" and the trainer
stands there by himself wondering what went wrong???!!!
Well you see, the basenji is very special, in many ways but so adorable!!

-Well, it's because I want to look bigger!!

- Why do you always wait for me to leave for work?

Anton:
-Well, it's because I want the warm cozy bed for myself!!

- Why do you always look like me like that?

Anton:
-Well, it's because I LOVE YOU MOM!!

Dad in Motala:
- Why are you always so tired in the mornings?

Ida:
-Well, it's because I want you to stay in bed an cuddle with me!!

Dad in Motala:
- Why do you never come to me when I call you?

Ida:
-Well, because it's the same distance for you to come to me!!

Dad in Motala:
- Why are you always hungry, sweetie?

Ida:
-Well, because I forgot that I ate just five minutes ago!!

Dad in Motala:
- Why are you standing on the dinner table when I get home?

Ida:
-Well, it's because I've been longing for you all day daddy!!
