Basenji

Basenji is the only breed that can not bark!

When you have chosen the basenji to be your new family member there is some things to consider and accept. A basenji isn't just like any other dog. Its stubborn, longing for adventure and incredible smart. By clicking on the links above, Why basenji, Health and Breed standard, you can read more about the basenji.

Basenjis first came to the western world in the fifties and they mad the foundation stock of the basenjis today in Sweden. By that the gene pool here is very small and the basenjis today are in some way related to each other.  To breed basenjis in Sweden is a very responsible work! We do have a very healthy stock but there is some things to consider in the choosing of a stud and broodbitch.

In the eighties some people form the US went to Africa to explore basenjis and try to bring back some. They went to the Avongara land. The trip was a success and they brought home 20 basenjis. The basenjis was given the prefix Avongara in their pedigree was carefully tested and then also stated healthy. The breeding of Avongara dogs took place and is called The African Stock Project. The African bloodlines is some hard to get here in Sweden due to the import rulings. But the government has stated that is will change in a few years and has already been changed regarding the import of semen, and also puppies under 3 moths old.

The Faraoland kennels (in cooperation with the Out of Africa kennels, France) is solo the breeder at this point to use an Avongara for stud in their breeding program. The stud is Avongara Imba Tena and the pups that were born was divided between the to kennels and left in Sweden is Shadow on the Grass, Sunshine, Sidney Pollack and Saga Out of Africa. They are 50% Africans. There is also other part Africans in Sweden, we have 1/4 and 1/8 part Africans that was imported from Denmark and the US.  The Africans look a little different but it only takes a few generations to maintain the breed standard but the purpose of using the African bloodlines is to large the gene pool and to get healthy and sound basenjis. We should be grateful that there is wild basenjis still in Africa to use when/if things go wrong. All in the best interest of the breed!! In the future the SunTribe kennels surely will mix our bloodlines with the African lines. We hope so, when the right opportunity arises. We look at this project with hope and are just waiting for the right moment to occur. With the Africans a new color also came. Its the brindle/white!! The color is now granted in Sweden.
